RU 22/2008: USA, a new Joanna of Orleans?
- USA: Important things are occurring in Colorado. You don’t locate it exactly? This State is in the center of the United States, halfway between Chicago and San Francisco, and contains the famous Rocky Mountains. Colorado counts 4.7 million inhabitants, on a total of 300 millions for all of the United States. A young lady of Colorado, Kristi Burton, 20, from a small village called Peyton, created the surprise. She is read-haired, pretty and Christian, and studies law. Already at13 she felt a vocation: to fight against abortion. Seven years later she creates the event which can change America. “I really believe every time in history we live in, there are people that need to be saved; in our time in history in America it is the unborn.” She created a small association “Colorado for Equal Rights”, by which she collects, with the help of 1300 dedicated pro-life volunteers, signatures in order to obtain a popular poll on the simple addition to the Constitution: “The terms ‘person’ or ‘persons’ shall include any human being from the moment of fertilization”. What goes straightly against the famous American abortion law, the judgment “Roe vs. Wade” of 1973 legalizing the assassination of the babies to be born. Result: 130,000 signatures, where there were needed only 76,074. After checking, by validating 103.377 of the signatures received through the association of the young lady, the Secretary of State of Colorado Mike Coffmann approved this Thursday, May 29th, 2008 the request for a popular poll called very precisely “Definition of the person”, fixing the date of the referendum to November 4th, 2008.
It’s the first time that this occurs in America, precisely in the American State which, after the disastrous law of 1973, had first legalized abortion: Colorado. Almost for doing good and to be forgiven? Kristi Burton comments: “Our strategy is that until you define the unborn child as a person, how can the laws protect them, when they can’t even consider them a person?” If the poll introduces this amendment to the Constitution of Colorado, a pillar of the abortion law of 1973 will collapse, and with it this whole iniquitous law, because “its fundamental weakness is the lack of definition of the human person”, had already conceded Harry Blackmun, one of the judges of the U.S. Constitutional Supreme Court in 1973. And he concluded, already at that time: “If this suggestion of personhood (for the unborn) is established, the (abortion rights) case, of course, callapses, for the fetus’ right to life is then guaranteed specifically by the (14th) Amendment.” Thus for the first time in 40 years of legalized child killing, pro-lifers have moved an entire state to consider the God-given right to life of the unborn.
The abortionists immediately captured the danger. One of the most important abortionist lobbies, “Protect Families, Protect Choice”, threatened: “This amendment could make abortion illegal at ALL times, even in the earliest weeks of pregnancy. It could outlaw abortion even in the cases of rape, incest and when a woman’s life is at risk… The amendment is so extreme it could even ban several common forms of birth control and prohibit in-vitro fertilization and lifesaving stem cell research”. From this point up to demagogic argumentation, even lie, the path is not far: “They want to declare persons as fertilized eggs!”, the press wrote aggressively. In short, the battle rages. The entire American abortionist camp is getting prepared to fall over poor Colorado, before the November referendum. But the Catholic Church, led by archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, sits quietly back, seeing “serious questions about this amendment’s timing and content”. Young Kristi Burton answered: “We believe that NOW is always the right time to do what’s right… It’s never right to stand back and say ‘well someday we’ll get that done’.
